In short: Cold-pressed jojoba oil is pressed from the seeds purely mechanically, with no added heat and no solvents. “Golden” stands for the unrefined oil with its natural golden-yellow colour. It contains no water and therefore needs no preservatives. Its INCI lists a single ingredient: Simmondsia Chinensis Seed Oil.
What is jojoba oil?
Jojoba oil comes from the seeds of the jojoba shrub, which grows in dry regions. Strictly speaking it isn’t an oil but a liquid wax made of so-called wax esters. That makes it very stable with a long shelf life. Its structure resembles the wax esters in the skin’s own sebum. That’s why it absorbs well and leaves no heavy, greasy film.
Cold-pressed, first pressing, golden: the terms
- Cold-pressed: The seeds are pressed mechanically without adding heat.
- First pressing: The oil from the first pressing run. Methods using heat or solvents extract more oil; the first cold pressing yields less.
- Golden / virgin / unrefined: The oil is not bleached or deodorised. It keeps its golden-yellow colour and slightly nutty scent.
- Refined: Cleaned, bleached and odourless, usually colourless to pale yellow.
How to use jojoba oil
On your face
Warm two to three drops in your hands and press them onto clean, slightly damp skin. In the evening on its own, or as the last step after your serum.
In your hair
Work a few drops into the ends, or massage into the scalp as a pre-wash treatment and rinse out after 20 to 30 minutes.
For beard, cuticles and body
One drop is enough for your beard or cuticles. Spread on damp skin after showering, it leaves skin supple.
Why there’s no water in it
